Mr. Brown Steals the Show at Esten’s Star Student Celebration

The Esten School recently held its end of the year Star Student celebration. Mr. Fred Brown, the retired Physical Education teacher, presented the annual Frederick D. Brown Spirit Award to six students who had demonstrated good sportsmanship, kindness to their peers, and school spirit throughout the year. This year’s winners were Meghan Dion, Kyle Shiner, Delaney Leahy, Sean Sugrue, Michael McPeck, Alison Sammon.
Mrs. McGrath, the principal of the Esten School, then thanked Mr. Brown for the gift of $5,800.00 that he had donated to the school last June. The students from all seventeen classrooms presented Mr. Brown with cards of appreciation and unveiled a display of Document Cameras, LCD projectors, and educational DVDs representing the purchases that had been made with Mr. Brown’s donation.
Mr. Brown then took everyone by surprise by donating an additional $10,000 to the Esten School! Mr. Brown’s only stipulation was that “the gift be used for the Esten School in a manner that reflects the students’ best interests.”
As the celebration continued, Mrs. McGrath, Mrs. Hayes, and Mrs. Pelissier presented certificates of award to the students in Grades 1-5 who were recognized for their academic achievements, their demonstration of effort toward reaching goals, and their values of citizenship. In addition, the students who had been chosen as Authors of the Week were recognized for the quality of their written compositions that had been placed in the hallway display cases for all to see throughout the year.
The entire student body was presented with a plaque and certificate of appreciation for their community service and support to the APWU Support Our Troops and Veterans’ Program from the American Postal Workers Union, AFL-CIO.
